Rule #1 for a healthy corporate culture

by Sören Stamer April 22, 2007 at 03:18 PM

"NO ASSHOLES"

Everyone who is interested in a healthy corporate culture should have zero tolerance for assholes. Those who have the guts to stand up against certified assholes make the difference.

So if you want to work in a healthy corporate culture, fight for it!

Fighting against assholes might sometimes be like fighting against windmills just like Don Quixote did. It depends very much on the management if such a fight will be victorious or not. But not only management. Colleagues are important, too. And what's so sad about it: The size of the company does not matter. Even the smallest company might experience problems like bullying.

It's not easy for me to repeat the word asshole. I just don't like it. Nevertheless I will adopt the word you brought up. Asshole is a very unspecific term. The problem with some assholes is to get aware of them. Some of them are very good actors. They are able to play many different roles. This again makes fighting against them very hard.

But if the corporate culture is healthy it is always worth fighting assholes. And if a company offers internal structures to get aware of such problems I don't see any problem in that. I believe that CoreMedia has built up such a structure that makes it rather impossible that an asshole will stay undetected.

Well, and I am glad I never met any ass... at CoreMedia. I still don't like this word...

Oh, and by the way: My personal motto fits here very well, too:

It's better to light a small candle than to curse the darkness. (Confucius)

In this case I would interpret it as:

It's better to fight an asshole than to silently sit in the corner and curse this asshole.

As Sartre says, hell is other people. Which makes for a nice provocative slogan, just like using strong language as in this book title. But as Sartre explains, the people in his play are dead, meaning they cannot adapt any more - then of course everybody is hell for everybody else, if you cannot adjust yourself and your environment, and have to fight the same fights all over again.

In this sense, the words "certified" and "zero tolerance" sound like a variation of "dead" to me. Wouldn't buy that book.

be close to your friends, be closer to your enemies...

(only if an asshole could be named as an enemy:))

Why don't you link English books to English sites? Amazon.de has almost no reviews on English books, Amazon.com has plenty!
